Sandburg Softball Splits at IVCC, Clinches Winning Record in Conference

The Carl Sandburg College softball team clinched a winning record in the Arrowhead Conference after earning a split at Illinois Valley on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers (16-28, 11-7) came from behind to take the opener 6-2 before falling 2-0 in Game 2.

Key Moment
Down 2-0 in the fifth, the Chargers got on the board with a four-run inning to grab the lead. After the Eagles retired the first two batters, Kylie Stineman (New Boston, Ill./Mercer County) drew a walk to start the rally, and Sarah Lindsay (Athens, Ill./Athens) was hit by a pitch. Haley Stevenson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) lined a hit to right to bring home Stineman, and a triple to center off the bat of Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) gave the Chargers a 3-2 lead. Whitney Wynkoop (Fulton, Ill./Fulton) followed with a single to make it 4-2.

Wynkoop finished 3 for 4, scored a run, drove in two and added a pair of stolen bases for the Chargers.

 Key Moment
IVCC, which held the Chargers to just two hits in the contest, got all the runs it would need in the first inning on a one-out double followed by an RBI single. Sandburg pushed just two runners into scoring position in the game.

Sandburg Star of the Game
Madison Benge (Stronghurst, Ill./West Central) pitched well in taking the loss, giving up just one earned run on four hits and two walks over six innings. Benge fanned three batters.

Up Next
The Chargers close out their regular season schedule at 3 p.m. Friday against Sauk Valley at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex. Sandburg opens the Region IV tournament May 2, with the opponent and location yet to be announced.
